Hoodies Are Too Hardcore
By Paulie

For the last two years I've been studying the underground music scene. I've uncovered something...people like to dress a like. I'll go to a ska show and I'll see a sea of ties and checkers. I'll go to a sXe show and I'll see an avalanche of hoodies and visors. I'll go to a punk show and see nothing but MXPX t-shirts and workshirts overloaded with patches and safety pins.

It seems like there is a uniform for shows, and now in college I feel like the scene is following me to class. I see more Hatebreed and Snapcase t-shirts sitting in the lounge eating my salad than I do chestbeating at the Unitarian Church in Philly. This summer I made a decision, I am going to do something TOTALLY unique to the underground...I'm going to be original. I'm going to wear what I want to wear to a show. If I decided to wear my "emo" sweatervest and a white t-shirt to a Dillinger Escape Plan show, than that's what I'm going to do, dangit.

The underground, starting with the Brit punk scene back in the late 70's, and continuing with the CBGB's scene up in NYC has been about personal expression, now you're not hardcore enough unless you have the newest Brother's Keeper t-shirt under the dopest straightedge windbreaker.

Hardcore isn't about keeping up with the Joneses (to steal an old school Ozzie and Harriet expression). It's not even about being true to the scene, it's about being true to yourself. Now if you honestly feel like wearing a hoodie and your khaki cargos, go for it. But if you feel like wearing that nice button down shirt your mom got you for Christmas, than do it.

There is truly only one dress code rule: don't wear the shirt or windbreaker of a band you're going to go see to their show. (IE: Don't wear a Snapcase shirt to a Snapcase show). Other than that, go nuts. Keep your elbows down, and if you knock someone over, pick him up, and brush the dust off his wifebeater.
