Boys Of Summer
by Dana White

The other day I was listening to Codeseven's "A Sense Of Coalition" CD, specifically their cover of "Boys of Summer".  Some of it really got me thinking about the things we used to do back when I was a kid, when we were free of worry or responsibility.  Now, as I sit here writing this at the age of 24, I look back and I realize just what we had.

There were 5 of us: Brad, Kris, Travis, Will & myself.  We would spend every weekend together usually working on our "fort" or just running around causing havoc.  The older we got, the more people we started hanging out with and the more we were exposed to "the real world".  Our friend Mike went to jail for murder (over marijuana), I moved, Brad got married, Will got married and moved to Florida, Sean moved to 10 different cities and we don't see him anymore, Travis pretty much disappeared and I hear he's married & Kris moved and works all the time.  Other people we used to hang out with have moved, married, lost it, or a million other things.  It used to be that our main worry was who's house we were going to stay at and what movie to rent.

What's with all this talk of bills and getting married?  What's with fixing our own meals and having to deal with an injury ourselves?  It's called growing up, my friend.  Friends come, and unfortunately go.  We have to wish them well and hope that we'll see them again sometime during life's journey.  I've made a lot of friends in everything that I've done, and I hope that it stays this way, but in being realistic, it won't.  There are people in this world that I would love to hang out with again, but I don't even know how to reach them, or they don't want to be reached.  I have to look back at all the fun we had and hold on to that, because that's it.

I'm glad we took advantage of our youth and managed to cause trouble everywhere within a 20 mile radius of Milton, WV.  I'm glad that I went out with every girl that I've ever gone out with (even though I'll sometimes tell you differently).  I'm glad that I knew Mike, Kris, Brad and the rest of them.  I've learned a lot from all these people and I've had a good time with all of them.  I'll sit you down one day and tell you all about it.  We WERE the boys of summer.
